WAGS Suffolk Tour 2003
13 - 15 June 2003
Tourist Trophy at stake
25 February 2003
As you may know, after making a gentle off the cuff remark about the preponderance of WAGS events in the South West, I was told to do something myself, so I was forced to agree to organise something in Suffolk, allegedly the origins of WAGS touring golf.
What's on offer? (24 places booked)
Friday, 13 June - 18 holes: Stableford points to Tourist Trophy
Meet at Ipswich (Purdis Heath) Golf Club. Tee is booked for 18 holes from 12:30 but those who wish can arrive around 10:00 for a warm up on the 9 hole course, and perhaps a glass of Adnams across lunch to smooth out swing kinks. Alternatively, just cut straight to the Adnams before teeing off.
On completion, we head to Thorpeness Golf Club to check-in to our accommodation (twin rooms, similar to those at St Mellion) before taking supper at the Dolphin Inn (É 01728 454994) nearby.
Adnams will, again, be available, quantities a personal choice.
Saturday, 14 June - 27 holes: Stableford points to Tourist Trophy
Swing grooving takes place at Aldeburgh's 9 hole Riverside course in the morning, and it is suggested we take lunch at Thorpeness, before tee off around 13:00. Team dinner (Adnams available) will take place at Thorpeness on Saturday night, and the Tourist Trophy will be awarded to the worthy winner. Thick heads nursed at Thorpeness Golf Club overnight.
Sunday, 15 June - 18 holes Matchplay
We play the championship 18 hole course at Aldeburgh on Sunday, and tee-off is booked for a leisurely 11:00 am. Format will be Launceston style matchplay event, teams balanced by performances across the week-end.
Suffolk's best kept secret - a James Braid design, 80+ years old, reminiscent of Sunningdale in a parkland style but with nicer members and better beer.
A links style golf course, top quality about which I can remember little, as I was totally "kummelled" on the one and only time I played it.
A well known quality classic, laden with deadly gorse - check the blossom out, it smells of coconuts. Bring a good short game with you. June suggests we will miss the wind and rain.
Approximately £300.00 for all golf and accommodation plus breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday. A deposit of £100 is required by 31 March 2003.
